Trusting God is one of the most fundamental aspects of the Christian faith, yet it is also one of the most challenging. As a pastor, I have seen firsthand how trust in God can transform lives, provide peace during storms, and strengthen believers in ways they never thought possible. However, I also know that trust doesn’t come easily. Life’s trials, uncertainties, and disappointments often make it difficult to fully rely on God. So, how can we develop a deep, unwavering trust in Him?
The Foundation of Trust
Trusting God begins with knowing Him. The more we understand His character, His promises, and His faithfulness, the easier it becomes to place our confidence in Him. Scripture is filled with reminders of God’s trustworthiness:
- Proverbs 3:5-6 reminds us to “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; 6: In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths. ”
- Isaiah 26:3 says, “You will keep him in perfect peace, Whose mind is stayed on You Because he trusts in You.”
- Romans 8:28 assures us that “And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.”
- Jeremiah 29:11 states: “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end. The story of Job is a powerful reminder that even when we can’t see what God is doing, He is still in control and working for our good”.
- Matthews 6:26 encourages us: “Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?”
These verses reinforce that trusting God is not about having all the answers but about believing in the One who does.
Trusting God in Difficult Times
One of the greatest tests of trust comes during hardships. When prayers seem unanswered, when suffering lingers, and when fear and doubt creep in, faith is truly refined.
As a pastor, I often counsel those going through trials. Whether it’s the loss of a loved one, a financial crisis, or a health struggle, the common question is: Why would God allow this? While we may not always understand His ways, we can trust that His heart is always for us. The story of Job is a powerful reminder that even when we can’t see what God is doing, He is still in control and working for our good.
Steps to Strengthen Your Trust
- Immerse Yourself in God’s Word – Faith grows through hearing and reading His promises. Make Bible study a daily habit.
- Pray with Honesty – Trust isn’t about pretending everything is fine. Bring your doubts, fears, and concerns to God in prayer.
- Remember Past Faithfulness – Reflect on times when God has provided, protected, or guided you before. He is the same yesterday, today, and forever.
- Surround Yourself with Believers – Community strengthens faith. Engage with other Christians who can encourage and pray for you.
- Let Go and Surrender – Trusting God often means releasing control and believing that He knows what’s best.
The Reward of Trusting God
When we fully trust God, we experience a peace that surpasses understanding (Philippians 4:7). We begin to walk in faith rather than fear, hope rather than despair, and joy rather than worry. Trusting God doesn’t mean life will be easy, but it does mean we never walk alone.
As a pastor, my prayer for you is that you will continue developing trust in God so deep that no trial can shake it. Keep seeking Him, keep believing, and keep trusting. He is faithful, and He will never let you down.
Blessings in Christ,
Bishop Vincent E. Jordan
